John was a mechanic at Republic Aviation Corp. and enlisted in the U.S.Navy in 1944. He attended boot camp at the N.T.S. in Sampson, New York. At Norman Oklahoma, he graduated from the Aviation Metalsmith School, and the Naval Air Technical Training Center School. He was assigned to the N.T.S. at Corpus Christi, Texas, where he assembled and repaired ship servicing aircraft. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
