Private First Class Madeline Dewey worked at the NY Stock Exchange until the bombing of Pearl Harbor when she left her position to work on P-47's at Republic Aviation Corp. She joined the Woman's Army Corp in 1944 at Grand Central Recruiting Station in NY, receiving her basic training at Fort Oglethrope, GA. Her orders transferred her to Ellington Field, TX, working in the Graduate School for Student Officers. She was nominated for WAC of the Week and was featured in the Tailspin, the weekly newspaper of the camp. Madeline's fondness for sailing was documented in the article that credited her as being the only woman to have successfully navigated the treacherous stretch from Long Island Sound to Eastport, ME in her 28-foot sloop, Herrschoff.
